Evelyn screamed. She wanted to rip her heart out of her chest. Her head pounded as if, any minute, it would explode. She absolutely abhorred herself for treating Rebecca this way. But her natural reflexes hindered her attempts at change.
She was desperate to become the mother Rebecca needed, but she didn’t know how else to go about it. She had tried everything. Rebecca needed her mother, not a lunatic. But the lunatic was all she was going to get.
The voices haunted Evelyn’s dreams as she struggled to find her own voice in the discordant melody in her head. She knew it was there, but she could barely hear it anymore. Once clear and resolute, she was losing control in her own mind. She needed to find her way back out of the maze she in which she had become lost.
“Hold on, Rebecca, Mommy is coming to help you.”
